Abstract: Focusing on a biographical episode of Baú de Ossos (1972), by the Brazilian meimorist Pedro Nava (1903-1984), the purpose of this article is to analyse references to French culture, from a historical and literary perspective, considering the register of social uses and behaviors. The objective of the study is to examine how the writer explores archival and compositional resources to reconstruct the last decade of his grandfather’s life as a prosperous trader, in Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro, from 1870 to 1880, during the process of Europeanization of the country. In adittion to important studies on Pedro Nava’s memorialistic prose, this comparative analysis is based on works by Alun Munslow (2000), Beatriz Colomina (1996), Jean-Yves Boursier (2002), Gilberto Freyre (1996) and Susan M. Stabile (2013).
