Grande sertão: veredas, landscape, ontology, João Guimarães RosaAbstract
This article proposes an analysis of the perception of the landscape in Grande sertão: veredas, by João Guimarães Rosa. In this novel, there is a mythopoetic conception of the sertão (hinterland), in which the landscape manifests itself as the language of nature and of human complexity. By proposing an interpretation anchored in the phenomenological perspective, this study seeks to reflect upon the landscape as an element of dialogue between the character Riobaldo and the experiencing world. Riobaldo conceives the sertão’s landscape as an existential body from which one can perceive nature and oneself. For this analysis, two antagonistic spaces in the book will be selected: Liso do Sussuarão and Guararavacã do Guaicuí, in which the landscape of the sertão will be highlighted as a physical and also ontological potency. In this study, theoretical-methodological approaches based on the thinking of Merleau-Ponty (2011), Michel Collot (2013) and Anne Cauquelin (2007), among others, will be used.
