Prevalence of dental trauma and associated factors in 11 to 19-year-old students in the rural areas of the town of Diamantina, MG, Brazil

Abstract

Aim: The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of dental trauma in schoolchildren in rural areas of the town of Diamantina, Minas Gerais, Brazil and other associated factors.

Methods: A cross- sectional study was carried out involving 207 students between 11 and 19 years of age. Data were collected through a clinical exam and self-administered questionnaires. The criteria proposed by Andreasen et al. (2007) were used for the classification of dental trauma. The questionnaire proposed by the Brazilian Advertisers Association (ABA-ABIPEME) was used to determine socioeconomic status, while the AUDIT questionnaire was used to evaluate alcohol intake. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS for Windows, version 17.0, SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA) and included frequency distribution and association tests. Statistical significance for association in the bivariate analysis was determined using the chi-square test (p < 0.05).

Results: The prevalence of dental trauma was 19.8% and presented a significantly significant association with age (p=0.028), overjet greater than 5 mm (p=0.026), inadequate lip coverage (p=0.039), and the use of alcohol in one’s lifetime (p=0.013). The Poisson logistic regression analysis revealed that accentuated overjet remained associated with dental trauma regardless of the other variables [PR = 2.90 (95% CI: 1.47 to 5.72); p=0.0001].

Conclusion: The prevalence of dental trauma was high and was associated with a lifetime use of alcohol, accentuated overjet, and inadequate lip coverage.
