Translation as a Political Act for the Humanization of Healthcare and as a Protest Against Obstetrical Violence in Brazil

This article is intended to examine the way in which we came to translate the essay Les brutes en blanc (2016), by the writer and also doctor Martin Winckler, as well as to discuss the choices surrounding the grammar of this translation. The text is a protest against medical maltreatment in France and one of the few critical essays produced by a doctor, specializing in women’s health, that deliberately explores the subject of obstetric violence. In this sense, the translation of this essay is fundamental in the Brazilian context as it dialogues closely with the need to recognize and denounce the obstetric violence in institutional health spaces in Brazil. Beginning with a global interpretation of the concept of “agents” in translation (Milton; Bandine, 2009) and supported by the notion of freedom in translation (Saint-Martin, 2012), we found the principal theoretical ways to justify our translation choices.
