The teacher retention is a challenge faced by many educational systems worldwide, and has impact on school systems, for schools and for students. This article aimed to investigate the factors associated with teachers’ attrition in Rio de Janeiro’s local education system. It makes use of local and national datasets, from Rio de Janeiro’s Education Department and from INEP, that allow the monitoring of the movement, between 2012 and 2016, of 3594 teachers who started working in the local education system between 2009 and 2011. The analyzes present logistic regression models that estimated the probability of teachers leaving their jobs. The results indicate that teachers that are younger and with a higher level of education were more likely to leave. Besides, students' characteristics, the experience of moving to other schools, and the pressures of a school accountability policy, in force during the period in which the research was carried out, were also associated with the probability of teachers leaving their jobs at the local system.
