The point of depart of the present text is the following question: would Hegel have been a liberal? To answer it we will confront the arguments of recognized philosopher from the liberal tradition ad those elaborated by Hegel about school and its relationship to the State, the church, the social immobility and mobility, formation and work. Under the influence of the principle of obligatory instruction, made firm by the French Revolution and object of furious contestation by Restoration the-orists, Humbold defends that the instruction is not under the responsibility of the State, but goes beyond its limitation. Hegel, to the opposite, sustains that the society has right and also the duty of interfering in the educational field. His strong argumentation in favor of an State active in school policies and also in the determination and in the control of the curriculum contents do not sound as a liberal tradition. However, on the other hand, at the same time, he supports the segregation between church and State. Hegel defends the liberal conscience of logical thinking, expressing the best of liberalism. Would he be a liberal or not?
