The specificity and nature of teaching work is a theme whose story is told in decades of reflections and investigations in the field of education. Considering this long journey of studies and researchers interested in teaching and focusing its analysis on some fundamental works, this article aims to resume the basic literature on the specificity and nature of teaching work and analyze its acquisitions, its impasses, and its limits. The text discusses the pioneering studies of Luiz Pereira and Aparecida Joly Gouveia, the contributions of Dermeval Saviani and Vitor Paro, and the propositions of Maurice Tardif and Claude Lessard. The article concludes by highlighting the advances made on the subject and points out that, along with the study of the specificity of teaching work, it is important to study its generality, placing teaching in the broader field of work studies.
