The present work analyzes two different cases, in which the suppression of pre-existing buildings inserted in two dynamic urban centers is evaluated, in Barcelona and in Belo Horizonte. It is questioned how to rescue the essence of heritage, responding to contemporary demands and considering their associative meanings, according to The Burra Charter and other studies. In Barcelona, the rediscovery and preservation of part of its ancient Roman wall from the 3rd century has recently occurred, with the suppression of some buildings, promoting reflections on the role of this heritage and its potential uses for the different social actors involved. This process is compared to the case of the Sulacap-Sulamérica Complex, in Belo Horizonte, in which an annex was built a long time ago, which mischaracterized the initial project, raising questions about its possible suppression and also initiating discussions regarding the current meaning of the uses of this heritage within the urban context. Thus, it seeks to apprehend what would be the essence of a heritage and what meanings of these contemporary uses can be provided by these assets.
