Abstract

Despite the increasing number of women’s football players, women continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions. The coach position is one of the areas with the greatest gender inequality due to its protagonism and visibility. In order to understand this reality, we explored the perceptions, experiences and trajectories of women working as football coaches in Brazil. The semi-structured interviews with six participants revealed common paths followed by them, such as the practice of football in childhood and youth, and the mistrust when occupying this space due to gender stereotypes. Participants who have been coached by women report being inspired by them. On the other hand, the absence of women as references discouraged them from following this path. This study presents important reflections on supports and strategies to challenge gender constructions in sport and promote greater participation of women as coaches in football.
