Abstract

Primo Levi introduces in his last book, The drowned and the saved, the category of the gray zone and some historical personages that inhabit it. Among them, members of the Sonderkommando. Both the gray zone and the Sonderkommandos have been subject to interpretations that seem to ignore essential traits for a more accurate understanding. In order to contribute to the discussions about the shades of gray and the controversial Sonderkommando, we highlight conceptual and historical frameworks, keeping Primo Levi's pen as a guideline.
