Solomon ben Yehudah ibn Gabirol was one of the most prominent figures of the Golden Age of the Jews in the Iberian Peninsula, between the 10th and 11th centuries of the common era. His contributions reflect the influence of Greek culture and cultural exchanges with the Arabs, during a period of peaceful and fruitful coexistence between these two peoples and also with Christians. In this article, we will examine some of his main contributions in light of the socio-historical context of the time, and how his thought, forward in time, influenced other intellectuals and still contributes to metaphysical reflections on man and the surrounding world even today.
