MARC21 Authorities for corporate body

 experience of the workshop given to Library Science students at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

The MARC21 format is a standard widely used in the catalogs of brazilian and foreign libraries, being an essential part of the routine of cataloging librarians. For this reason, teaching this format in undergraduate courses is essential for students to become familiar with the fields and subfields that this format presents, in addition to being a fundamental preparation for the world of work and for professional activity in the area of ​​Library Science. To contribute to the education of students and encourage the practice of using the MARC21 format, a workshop on MARC21 Authorities was offered to Library Science students at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, focusing on corporate bodies, as a way to prepare them for professional life in the technical processing of a library. This experience report seeks to analyze the point of view of the participating students, with the purpose of determining the effectiveness of the workshop in learning how to represent corporate bodies through the use of the MARC21 format in authority records. An online form was used as an evaluation method, sent to participants via email after the workshop. The results showed that 76% of the participants left the workshop very satisfied and 100% concluded that the workshop contributed to their understanding of the proposed topic. It can be concluded from this experience report that the university's undergraduates approve workshops with practical activities and are interested in offering future workshops with new cataloging topics.
