Metadata for cultural collections

This article investigates metadata standards oriented to the structuring, description, management and preservation of cultural collections. There are several metadata models created by communities in the bibliographic, archival and museological areas available today, most of which are freely accessible, but which are still not widely used in Brazil. Given the growing demand for linked open data within the Semantic Web, it is extremely important to know the tools available for the description and publication of online collections. The objective of this study is to map different types of metadata for cultural resources, pointing out their main characteristics and use possibilities. This is an exploratory and qualitative research, consisting of a literature review and document analysis. In conclusion, the potential for using the metadata schemas in Brazilian cultural institutions is highlighted, enabling the management of online collections efficiently and oriented towards interoperability.
