Architecture and the desire for power
The symbolism of spaces and objects in the discourses of the novel Ancient Tillage

In addition to the analysis of the antagonistic discourses of power, which govern Ancient Tillage, we are interested in the spatial organization, the study of which is essential for reading and understanding the novel in detail. The integration between space, man, language, themes and the articulation of the narrative in the book is total: describing the space is talking about the man who lives there and presenting the man is introducing his environments. Therefore, in this essay, we use the notions of Mircea Eliade, about sacred and profane, chaos and cosmos and sobrenatura, and Bachelard, about spaces, in order to extract from the narrator’s “scenographic” incursions the symbolic constitution of the spaces of the Houses (be it the House father’s, the old house or André’s guesthouse room), identifying what is common or different between them.
