Scientometrics beyond quantification:
citation analysis from the perspective of power-knowledge relations and sociology of science
Keywords:
Power-knowledge, sociology of science, epistemology of information scienceAbstract
Introduction: Citation analysis is a fundamental tool for understanding the dynamics of scientific knowledge and its power relationship. In addition to measuring the influence of authors and institutions, this tool can reveal power structures and inequalities in scientific production. Objectives: To present reflections on the social and political nature of citation analysis as a tool of scientometrics, showing how power-knowledge relations manifest in producing and disseminating scientific knowledge. Methodology: Theoretical-exploratory bibliographic research. Two theoretical-conceptual frameworks from the social sciences were adopted as the basis for argumentation: Michel Foucault's "power-knowledge" and Pierre Bourdieu's symbolic capital. Results and Discussions: The critical analysis of citations reveals inequalities in scientific production, with greater emphasis on the most prestigious scientists and institutions. This reflection reinforces the need to consider social and political factors when evaluating scientific knowledge. Concluding remarks: This manuscript contributes to thinking about scientometrics as a socially constructed practice and highlights the importance of promoting a more inclusive science.
