(In)visibility of persons with disabilities in the scientific production in information science

Abstract

The research is aimed to investigate the (in)visibility of persons with disabilities in scientific production in the area of Information Science in Brazil. It is a bibliographic research of exploratory kind with quantitative and qualitative approach. The analysis was done under the perspective of Scientometrics in the Annals of the National Meeting of Research in Information Science, categorizing them by Workgroups in the years from 2017 to 2023. The paper discusses about the aspects of memory, identity and social invisibility of the persons with disabilities by relating them to the scientific production in the area of Information Science. The results identified 34 works in a total of 2,470 published works, in which it was verified that the Workgroups that most approached the PWD and their related questions were the WG 8 – Information and Technology; the WG 6 – Information, Education and Work; and the WG 3 – Mediation, Circulation and Appropriation of Information. Based on the above, it is noted that there is a scientific production about the persons with disabilities in the area of IS, although in a timid way. It is perceived that, even still a little evident, the studies point that Information Science can contribute a lot to the advance of the study of the theme discussed in this paper.
