This article analyses the 1st movement of Villa-Lobos’ String Quartet nº 7 and search for possible references to
Franz Haydn’s string quartets, as suggested by Villa-Lobos in conversations with Arnaldo Estrella

Author Biography

Paulo de Tarso Salles, University of São Paulo (USP) (Brazil)

Composer, teacher, guitarist and researcher born in São Paulo. He teaches Counterpoint, Harmony and Music Analysis at the Music Department of ECA/USP. Coordinator of PAM - Music Perception and Analysis Laboratory (ECA/USP), together with Prof. Dr. Adriana Lopes Moreira. Author of the books: Aberturas e impasses: a música no pós-modernismo (ed. Unesp, 2005) and Villa-Lobos: processos composicionais (Ed. Unicamp, 2009). He conducts research on: Villa-Lobos' compositional processes; Musical Analysis of 20th- 21st century works and Music and Post-Modernism. His research project "Villa-Lobos compositional processes: an analysis of his String Quartets" is supported by FAPESP. He was President of the Scientific Committee of the International Symposium Villa-Lobos held in São Paulo (November 16-21, 2009), at MASP, on the occasion of the tributes to the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Villa-Lobos.
