Abstract

This paper tries to identify structures of musical rhetoric in the masterpiece Responsórios para Quarta Feira Santa by Antônio dos Santos Cunha (1775?-1822?), it also presents a brief study about the composer and the liturgical use of his composition, and shows how this analysis can help to create conceptions of performance.

Author Biography

Edilson Rocha, Federal University of São João del-Rei (Brazil) (UFJS)

Adjunct professor at the Music Department of UFSJ, PhD in Conducting from UFBA, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ricardo Mazzini Bordini, and master's degree from the same institution, under the supervision of Maestro Erick Magalhães Vasconcelos. He has a degree in conducting and singing from the UFMG School of Music. He was a professor in conducting workshops promoted by UFSJ, UNIMONTES and UNESP, and professor of musical structuring, singing and conducting at Conservatório Estadual de Música Padre José Maria Xavier, in São João del-Rei, MG. He has conducted several choral and orchestral groups and has dedicated himself to the study, interpretation, and dissemination of the historical repertoire of Minas Gerais.
