Biotechnology is a contemporary science with major social and environmental impacts because, in addition to driving scientific advances, it can also have undesirable consequences. For this reason, it is essential to include biotechnological themes in Biology and Chemistry education to support critical understanding of the socio-environmental effects of biotechnologies. Thus, this study aimed at identifying biotechnology contributions from a Science, Technology, and Society (STS) perspective to teach Biology and Chemistry. Accordingly, a qualitative, descriptive study was conducted. Coordinators and professors from the Bachelor's Degree Courses in Biological and Chemical Sciences at the Federal University of Ceará and the Federal University of Campina Grande participated in this study. Data collection involved two questionnaires with open- and closed-ended questions, structured into six and four sections, respectively. Data analysis used categorical content analysis with four established analytical categories. As a result, the coordinators considered that biotechnology themes have contributed positively to Biology and Chemistry professors’ qualifications; however, they have shown some challenges for their effective integration into these courses. According to the studied professors, biotechnology has strengthened Biology and Chemistry education in three essential areas: integrating theoretical and practical knowledge, understanding and preserving biodiversity, and scientific literacy. Therefore, this study highlights the potential of approaching biotechnologies from an STS perspective and encourages discussions associated with social and environmental contexts.
