Identifying Quotations in 1 Corinthians 11:3-16
An Analysis of Argumentative Orientation and Point of View

In this article, we aim to verify, from a linguistic perspective, the occurrence of quotations in 1 Corinthians 11:3-16, which deals with the use of veils by women in religious assemblies. For this purpose, we present an analysis of argumentative orientation and point of view (PdV) based on theoretical-methodological instruments of Textual Discourse Analysis (ATD), Discourse Traditions Model and Argumentative Semantics. Articulating such approaches, we identify, in a first step, the argumentative orientation of propositions-statements and demonstrate, in the second, the existence of antagonistic points of view: the Pauline-PdV and the Corinthian-PdV, refuted by the apostle. The results corroborate the occurrence of verses 4 to 9 as quotations not endorsed by the apostle in the fragment in question.
