Objective: to investigate the work process of nurses in childcare consultations
regarding child developmental surveillance in family health units. Method:
a qualitative research conducted with 19 nurses who performed childcare
consultations with children under two years old in family health units. Data
collection took place from March to July 2016 through semi-structured interviews
and thematic content analysis was used. Results: it was evidenced that the nurses
implement some care actions recommended for childcare consultation, but the
surveillance of the neuropsychomotor development and the relational techniques
are weakened. The factors that hinder the work process of nurses in conducting
child developmental surveillance were the poor infrastructure, lack of inputs and low
adherence of mothers to consultations. Conclusion: the qualification of nurses and
the awareness of managers are necessary to provide favorable working conditions
for the promotion of comprehensive childcare.
