Métodos terapéuticos alternativos para tratar la discapacidad del dolor lumbar crónico

Resumen

El lumbago raramente se trata sólo con fármacos debido a la relación compleja entre los motivos que la ocasionan. Los métodos terapéuticos alternativos son opciones a considerar en el tratamiento adecuado de este tipo de dolor. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar la efectividad de los métodos alternativos en el tratamiento de discapacidad de personas con dolor lumbar crónico y describir las herramientas utilizadas para evaluar tal discapacidad. Se trata de una revisión integradora de la literatura consultada en las bases de datos PubMed, BIREME y The Cochrane Library, en las cuales se seleccionaron los artículos publicados entre 2007 y 2012. Se incluyeron las publicaciones originales en inglés, portugués y español, con los descriptores low back pain, disability, treatment y chronic. La muestra consistió en 34 artículos de los 1.284 encontrados. Los artículos seleccionados fueron agrupados, según su enfoque, en cinco categorías: fisioterapia, enfoque multidisciplinario, asociación de tratamientos, ejercicios aeróbicos y otros tratamientos. En la mayoría de los estudios las herramientas utilizadas para evaluar la discapacidad estaban validadas y aquéllas más utilizadas eran Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire y Oswestry Disability Questionnaire. Los métodos alternativos identificados en esta revisión en general reflejan positivamente mejora de la discapacidad relacionada con el dolor lumbar crónico y, entre ellos, los más estudiados fueron los métodos con enfoque fisioterapéutico y los métodos de enfoque multidisciplinario. Los datos generados por el presente estudio podrán ayudar a definir protocolos de tratamientos alternativos para el manejo adecuado del dolor lumbar crónico.
