Abstract

The aim of this article is to present the characteristics of the State according to Max Weber. The State was one of the central themes of Max Weber's theoretical development. This theme was dealt with from various perspectives and in several of his texts. The description of the State takes up some of the central points of Weber's vision of the process, which he called Western rationalization. The article analyzes three fundamental characteristics of the description of the State according to Max Weber: the idea of the rational-legal bureaucratic machine, the figure of the charismatic leader who ultimately guarantees legitimacy and, finally, the vision of a constant and permanent struggle for the monopoly of violence that is supposed to be legitimate. These are the three pillars on which Max Weber's notion of the State is based.
