A voyage into tartary
The political project of the universal church and the union between orthodox and anglicans

This article introduces the first part of A Voyage into Tartary. This was a work published anonymously in London in 1689, which was read by the French as an exponent of the libertine productions, and by the Americans as one of the earliest examples of science fiction and the Enlightenment. Tartary, however, finds a better affiliation in the historical chain of utopias, along with its English literary manifestations of the late 17th century. Like many productions of this genre, the book consists of a formulation of a bourgeois political project. In its case, particularly, it presents the political project of bourgeois ancestry, envisaged by a number of intellectuals of moderate political position at the end of the 17th century to simultaneously oppose the despotic rule of James II, finally definitive in absolutism and promote economy and the modernization of England. One of the fundamental proposals of this project is presented in the first section of the book; it consisted in proposing a universal church of universal philosophical principles capable of embracing all moderate religious designations, uniting the Protestants against James II and simultaneously giving them political power. It began with the proposition of an agreement with the Eastern Orthodox Churches, especially with the Greek Church, then for the English, simultaneous source of ancient knowledge, religious tradition and an economic ally, frugal attributes for the conquest of the plan. Here we give a presentation of this project as it appears in the first part of the narrative.
