Abstract

We analyze the concepts of Pretuguês and Amefricanidad (Gonzalez, 2020) to analyze practices of resistance in the urban peripheries of Latin America. As spaces of enunciation that challenge hegemonic narratives and offer epistemological and political alternatives to sociospatial and urban problems, Pretuguês and Amefricanidad can establish a public sphere of contestation and critique. Gonzalez's research aligns with the notion of a counter-public sphere (Kluge and Negt, 1973, 2016), highlighting how these linguistic and cultural practices reconfigure relations of power, identity, and belonging, proposing a critique of the city and Latin American society. We examine the agency of Black women (Black mother, domestic worker, and mulata) and experiences such as the Museum of Urban Quilombos and Favelas, the Quilombo Manzo Ngunzo Kaiango, and the Reinado da Guarda de Moçambique Treze de Maio in Belo Horizonte to understand the emergence of forms of social, collective, and resistance organization in peripheral contexts.
