Auto da Compadecida (1955), by Ariano Suassuna (1927-2014), is a work of Brazilian dramaturgy that is fruitful in staging and adaptations. This play is a miscellany of past and local traditions, with re-elaborations of functions from classical theater and the medieval genre itself, the auto. Therefore, we found in Suassuna’s text the reminiscences of the classic choir in the interventions of the Clown character. Furthermore, we verified how these speeches are closely linked to the actions of ecclesiastical characters, in the construction of a moralizing anti-clericalism. This study mainly dialogues with the proposals of Luís Machado de Abreu (2004; 2019), Isabel Castiajo (2012), Anatol Rosenfeld (1985) and Segismundo Spina (1989).
