Abstract

The animated feature film The Bizarre Fish from The Abyssal Zone by Marcelo Marão presents a narrative based on the author's personal experiences. The objective of this article is to analyze the main characters of the film in the narrative and aesthetic dimensions. In the field of narrative, the film and its characters, their functions, performances, personalities and meanings in the story are presented. Regarding aesthetics, a formal study of the style and design of characters, as well as their movements, is carried out. A parallel is made with films that narrate similar journeys considering symbolic issues and it is concluded that the characters form an archetypal tripod, representing the fight against the inexorable nature of the course of life, in an aesthetic and diegetic way consistent with the author's creative sense.

  • Marcelus Gaio Silveira de Senna, UFRJ

    Doutor e Mestre em Design pela PUC-Rio, especialização em Cinema de Animação também pela PUC-Rio. É graduado em Cinema pela Universidade Estácio de Sá e Técnico em Design Gráfico pelo SENAI. É professor de desenho artístico e modelo vivo na Escola de Belas Artes da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, onde coordena o Quadro a Quadro – Laboratório de Animação Analógica e Digital. Tem experiência na área das Artes Visuais, com ênfase em animação, ilustração e design gráfico. É professor e pesquisador do Programa de Pós-graduação em Cinema da Universidade Federal Fluminense (PPGCine—UFF) onde desenvolve a pesquisa Linguagem da Animação: propostas para conceituação.

  • Eliane Muniz Gordeeff, CIEBA/FBAUL

    Eliane Gordeeff é animadora, designer gráfica, professora, investigadora de animação ligada a Centros de Investigação em Portugal (CIEBA/FBAUL) e no Brasil (LAAD/UFRJ). É membro da ASIFA, da Society for Animation Studies, da Casa da Animação, e co-diretora da Quadro Vermelho Produções. Produziu, animou e dirigiu mais de 16 curtas de animação, alguns deles exibidos em festivais internacionais como Cinanima, Nuevo Latinoamericano de Havana, Anima Mundi, Sicaf, Anima e Encounters Festival. É doutora em Multimédia, com mais de 100 textos publicados (académicos e não académicos), e com mais de 12 mil leitores no Researchgate.org.
    Autora do livro "Aesthetic Interferences: The Stop Motion Technique in the Animation Narrative" (2019), é também correspondente de Portugal, Espanha e Brasil para o zippyframes.com.
