From rags to riches, from Estella to Cruella

This study analyzes the film Cruella (2021) to understand Estella’s transformation into Cruella De Vil, highlighting the importance of rites of passage and visual symbolism, such as trash, which represents her metamorphosis. The film analysis, based on Rafael H. Quinsani’s (2010) methodology, deconstructs the narrative to explore how these visual and symbolic elements reflect the protagonist’s psychological evolution. This study concludes that the aesthetics of trash and other symbols play a crucial role in constructing Cruella’s identity, revealing deep layers of rebellion, redefinition of values, and personal affirmation.
