Abstract

The samurai film is an important genre in Japanese cinema, being present in films of that country throughout the history of Japan’s cinematic art. This article deals with the chanbara film, term by which the samurai film is known in its place of origin. The text addresses the characteristics and the history of this film genre in Japan since its inception in the late nineteenth century to the present day. This study objective is to get a better understanding of the genre and its peculiarities.

Marcelo Dídimo Souza Vieira, Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), Brasil

Marcelo Dídimo é professor adjunto do Curso de Cinema e Audiovisual e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação do Instituto de Cultura e Arte da UFC. É Mestre e Doutor em Multimeios/Cinema pela UNICAMP. Recentemente realizou Estágio Pós-Doutoral na Columbia University, New York. É autor do livro "O Cangaço no Cinema Brasileiro".

Jorge Couto de Alencar, Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), Brasil

Bacharel em Comunicação Social - Publicidade e Propaganda pela Universidade de Fortaleza (2002) e bacharel em Cinema e Audiovisual pela Universidade Federal Fluminense (2013). Pós-Graduado Lato Senso em Gestão e Business Law pela Universidade de Fortaleza (2015). Atualmente cursa o Mestrado em Comunicação da Universidade Federal do Ceará, linha de pesquisa: Fotografia e Audiovisual.
