Abstract

This paper deals with the beginning of the cinematographic career of Len Lye, precursor of film without camera.
The text tells how the artist was deeply influenced by the South Pacific art, while incorporating modern art issues in his works. Thus it presents analysis of five of his films, focusing on the artist as creator of a pure cinema, one made by rhythms and chromatic sensations.

Author Biography

Paulo Roberto de Carvalho Barbosa, UFMG

Comecei a carreira como chargista. Trabalhei por cerca de vinte anos na imprensa sindical, tendo recebido diversos prêmios em salões de humor pelo Brasil afora. Nos últimos dez anos, dediquei-me ao mestrado e ao doutorado em Artes Visuais, dos quais resultaram dois livros sobre o cinema dos primórdios. Trabalho hoje como arte-educador, dando também cursos de história do cinema para alunos de pós-graduação. Também escrevo sobre arte e cinema para revistas acadêmicas, além de trabalhar como ilustrador.
