Abstract

This essay undertakes a unique exploration, interweaving the pictorial creations of Edouard Manet with the intricate discourse surrounding eroticism, as elucidated by Georges Bataille. A significant portion of Manet's artistic output appears to be intricately tied to the nuanced realm of eroticism. Viewed as a facet of human existence that embodies excess and extravagance, Bataille's conceptualization of eroticism serves as a guiding framework for assessing a selection of Manet's artworks. This assessment particularly centers on specific themes within Manet's oeuvre, including depictions of female nudes, artworks dedicated to the world of bullfighting, and reflections on mortality.
