The role of academic librarians has undergone numerous transformations over the last two decades. These transformations are associated with different socio-technical factors, including the ostensible dematerialization of information objects, the gradual reduction of the custodial nature of university libraries, changes in the training processes of researchers and in the ways of searching through information sources, the expansion of the collaborative nature of intellectual production, access to information online and the storage of information in clouds. All of these transformations pose challenges for librarians, who will have to take a leading and critical role in all the processes that make up the social network for the production of cultural, scientific and technological knowledge.
