Novos encontros, antigos conceitos: hierarquização e (des)qualificação social na Índia portuguesa (Séculos XVI-XVII)

Resumo

O presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar as formas de classificação e hierarquização dos indivíduos pertencentes à Índia portuguesa entre os séculos XVI e XVII. Na África, na Ásia e na América critérios de estratificação social moldavam o encontro entre portugueses e nativos que, nos processos de mestiçagens biológicas e culturais, modificaram e ampliaram noções de estratificações e identidades locais pelas quatro partes do mundo. Dessa forma, objetivamos entender como tais dinâmicas sociais foram empreendidas no além-mar português, tendo como ponto de referência a Índia portuguesa e a inserção de novas categorias sociais – casados, mestiços e castiços - que compuseram a sociedade indo-portuguesa, além de destacar a formação de um clero nativo e mestiço no interior das ordens religiosas no interesse maior de traçar similitudes e particularidades em relação aos demais espaços coloniais portugueses no Oriente.

ABSTRACT: This article is mainly aimed to analyze the forms of classification and ranking of individuals belonging to the Portuguese India between the XVI e XVII centuries In Africa , Asia and America social stratification criteria shaping the encounter between the Portuguese and natives, in the processes of biological and cultural miscegenation, modified and extended stratification notions and local identities by the four parts of the world . Thus, we aimed to understand how such social dynamics have been undertaken in the Portuguese overseas, with the benchmark Portuguese India and the inclusion of new social categories - casados, mestiços and castiços - who formed the Indo-Portuguese society, and highlights the formation of a native and mestizo clergy within the religious orders in the best interest of tracing similarities and particularities in relation to other Portuguese colonial spaces in the East.
