Fidelidade infiel: a trajetória paleográfica e diplomática do testamento do rei D. Pedro II de Portugal

Resumo

Este artigo analisa o desenvolvimento da Paleografia e da Diplomática entre os séculos XVIII e XX, enquanto ciências, a partir da transmissão do testamento do rei de Portugal D. Pedro II, escrito originalmente em 1704 pelo seu conselheiro confessor, o padre jesuíta Sebastião de Magalhães. As três edições do texto fundador, a primeira de 1726, a segunda de 1746 e a última de 1967 acompanham momentos importantes da história portuguesa, assim como das instituições responsáveis por guardar seus monumentos escritos, e oferecem pistas sobre a fundação e consolidação da tradição paleográfica em Portugal. A partir do texto fundador e de seus três testemunhos consecutivos, mostraremos como a Paleografia e a Diplomática foram fundamentais não só para uma interpretação adequada da escrita, como também para reaproximar a edição do texto original.

ABSTRACT: This paper analyzes the development of the Paleography and the Diplomatic among eighteenth and twentieth centuries as science, from the transmission of the D. Pedro II s testament, Portuguese king, originally written in 1704 by his confessor and adviser, the Jesuit priest Sebastian de Magalhaes. The three testimonies of the founding text, the first of 1726, the second 1746 and the last 1967 accompany important moments of the history of Portugal, as well as the institutions responsible for keeping their written monuments, and they offer clues about the foundation and consolidation of paleographic tradition in Portugal. From the founding text and its three consecutive testimonies, we will show how Paleography and Diplomatic were crucial not only for a proper interpretation of the writing, but also for reconnecting the editions to their original text.
