Historical archeology and the indigenous presence in the ruins of the ancient Forte Cumaú in Amapá

In recent years, research in the context of historical archaeology dedicated to fortification contexts present in the Amazon has contributed to a better understanding of the process of defense and occupation of this territory, while highlighting the presence of the European colonizer. This is the case of the former Forte Santo Antônio de Macapá, known as Forte Cumaú, located on the right bank of the Igarapé da Fortaleza, in the municipality of Santana, in the state of Amapá. By initiating, in September 2024, an archaeological impact assessment project near this archaeological site, the data collected allow the identification of indigenous presence through the archaeological traces found in this place, in a context marked by a strongly Eurocentric history.
