Abstract

Although archaeology is commonly understood as a field of research devoted to studying the past, the scope of archaeological science extends into contemporaneity. An example of this is archaeogaming, a field within archaeology dedicated to the study of games, including video games. By arguing that games are simultaneously archaeological sites and artifacts, archaeogaming employs traditional archaeological techniques to study them and to create its own games. In this way, the present paper aims to propose an analysis of the game Dark Souls III (2016), using archaeogaming as an approach to demonstrate how video games can intertwine with archaeological science, considering games not only as objects of study but also as a medium capable of reshaping how archaeology communicates and interacts with the public.
