¿Y si el pasado fuera una simulación?

Resumen

Este artículo propone una lectura crítica de la simulación arqueológica como condición constitutiva del conocimiento sobre el pasado. La hipótesis central es sencilla: el pasado arqueológico nunca se ofrece al presente como presencia inmediata; llega a través de vestigios, lagunas, clasificaciones, analogías, imágenes, narrativas, tecnologías y precomprensiones disciplinares. En este sentido, la arqueología siempre ha trabajado con formas de simulación, mucho antes de la aparición de los entornos digitales. Planos, cortes estratigráficos, tipologías, mapas, reconstrucciones, exposiciones museográficas y narrativas históricas organizan mundos posibles a partir de fragmentos materiales. La ciberarqueología no inaugura esta condición; la hace visible, navegable y críticamente discutible. A partir del caso Romariz 3D y de la instalación Simulación Arqueológica, el artículo analiza el paso del vestigio al entorno digital, distinguiendo entre el modelo tridimensional, la reconstrucción, la simulación, la realidad virtual y la experiencia. En diálogo con la ciberarqueología, el archaeogaming, la teoría arqueológica posprocesual, la crítica foucaultiana del archivo y los principios de transparencia de la arqueología virtual, se sostiene que la simulación arqueológica importa menos como imagen final del pasado que como espacio de disputa interpretativa. Su contribución reside en la capacidad de exponer elecciones, incertidumbres, presupuestos técnicos y regímenes de visibilidad. Simular el pasado, en este sentido, no significa abandonar la materialidad, sino hacer explícitas las condiciones a través de las cuales la materialidad se vuelve inteligible, habitable y socialmente reconocida.
