The article approaches the fiction diary Memorial de Aires as an authorial game carried out by Machado de Assis in the construction of this narrative, which turned out to be intriguing due to a certain distance from the novelistic technique used by its author, compared to his previous production. To this end, a discussion is held around the classification of this writing, discussing the most diverse approaches from critics and scholars of the writer from Rio de Janeiro. The Memorial is created as writing, as the authorial and fictional game in its construction is perceived. In order to understand this process, we discuss here the notion of autobiography, autofiction and author, categories over which Machado’s narrative slides.
