The Dominants in the Brazilian Translation of Leopardi’s Zibaldone

This paper proposes some guidelines for the Brazilian Portuguese translation of Zibaldone di pensieri (1817-1832) by Giacomo Leopardi (1798-1837). One of the theories that guide the translation is Peeter Torop’s theory (2010), which highlights the choice of the dominants in the translated text as part of the translating strategy. This choice is strictly related to the identification of the dominants from the original text, which stems from a careful analysis, aimed at distinguishing the elements that characterize it and determine its poetics. In the specific case of the Zibaldone, the dominants of the Brazilian translation can be considered as variants that are adjusted and revised as the translation proceeds. This is due to the peculiarity of this work by Leopardi, the number of participants in the translational activity, and the fact that the translation will be published on line in various stages (www.zibaldone.cce.ufsc.br), assuming by several aspects the characteristics of an “open” text and in “movement”.
