This article analyses Maurice Blanchot’s conception of literature from his own theoretical reflection on what would be the bet the author makes in the writing game he or she engages in with literature – in which he or she has, from the very beginning, both the luck and the failure as horizon. As a structuring part of this analysis, the blanchotian narrative study Celui qui ne m’accompagnait pas will play a key role promoting the dialogue between the French writer’s theory and fiction, as his narratives tend to be, in most part of his fictional work, a re-writing, a re-reading or a re-elaboration of his thinking about what literature would be.
