Stylistic analysis and commented version of the short story Adam and Eve, by Machado de Assis

Abstract: This paper aims at promoting a comparative stylistic analysis of the short story Adão e Eva, by Machado de Assis, and its 2018 translation into English by Costa e Patterson, based on the criteria of Leech and Short (2007), as well as to propose a new, commented version of the short story into English. The selected methodology was the mixed method, in which the quantitative approach was used in the stylistic and qualitative analysis, both in the stylistic analysis and in the proposed commented version, in order to assess whether the changes at the microlevel (linguistic) had an impact at the macrolevel (style).Issues of domestication and foreignization are addressed (VENUTI, 2008 [1995]), along with retranslation (BERMAN, 2013) and the polysystem theory (EVEN-ZOHAR, 2000). Finally, a new version for the short story was proposed, followed by an analysis of the choices made in the translation process.
