Patriots, Drunks and Other Romantics

This text proposes that in Brazil the literature produced between 1836 and 1860 does not necessarily configure distinct generations, but echoes the contradictory complexity of the modern commodity production system. The paper compares the differences and the standardization of criteria with which the literary historicism of Silvio Romero and José Verísimo establishes phases for Brazilian romanticism. From this point of view, the work of Gonçalves Dias, Gonçalves de Magalhães, Álvares de Azevedo, Bernardo Guimarães, Manuel Antonio de Almeida, Sousândrade, among others, participates in the same contradictory and divergent artistic time. The change in this context occurs from the late 1860s with the country’s economic and political crisis, the abolitionist and republican campaign, and the vogue of positivism, coexisting with the moment of production of Castro Alves’ work and José de Alencar’s last novels.
