In his history of poetry, Aristotle extols a nowadays obscure poem: the Margites, attributed to Homer. From his point of view, the poem had been a turning point in the development of low style poetry, given its dramatic character and its focus on the ridiculous instead of general criticism. The poem exists only as testimonia and fragments, but its comic poetics shows up both in its plot (which interestingly relates to Aristotle’s poetic theory), and its use of metre and traditional epic phrasing. While telling a low story in an inadequately high style, Margites plays with traditional expectations connected to epic formulas.
