Considering that race produces subalternized genders both in relation to Black women and Black men (Carneiro, 2003), this article aims to analyze the short story “Di lixão” (Olhos d’água [2014]), by Conceição Evaristo, featuring a Black boy. The analysis will address the condition of Black men in our society, since understanding hegemonic Western masculinity means realizing that, in addition to constructing femininity as its counterpart, it also constructs an “other” to affirm its existence: Black masculinity. In “Di lixão”, we witness the recollection of a life lived in a constant state of death, unfolding precisely within the psychological time of the character’s experience of death. This analysis is based on the understanding of the relationship between race and class – given that the Black body was the first to be turned into merchandise (Mbembe, 2014) – and on the precariousness of Black lives as a result of structural racism, which manifests not only in individual behaviors but also in broader social relations.
