The objective of this study was to investigate, from a descriptive perspective, how a generative artificial intelligence tool would translate a sample from a work of mass-market literature, under the assumption that this type of text is less challenging and complex and would therefore, in theory, produce satisfactory results. To this end, an excerpt from the first chapter of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie was translated using ChatGPT. The findings indicate that ChatGPT does have the potential to produce sufficiently coherent translations; however, they also underscore the indispensable role of the human translator, particularly in crafting effective prompts and performing essential post-editing.
