In 1710, the French Jesuit Joseph de Jouvancy published the second tome of the fifth volume of the monumental series Historiae Societatis Jesu, whose aim was to record the history of the Society of Jesus. In the present study, we begin with an introductory analysis, followed by reflections based on the contributions of Cortez (2009) on the visualist character of language, with the aim of illuminating Jouvancy’s Latin prose as an heir to the Renaissance tradition. We then present a translation, accompanied by notes, of an excerpt from the aforementioned work. This annotated translation is preceded by a brief contextual study, informed by the insights of Monteiro (1994) and Métraux (1979), concerning the events narrated in the excerpt. Particular attention is given to the confrontation between Christian and Indigenous worldviews in Brazil during the early centuries of European domination.
