Gertrude Stein’s Theater: Surpassing the Limits of Language and Translation

Abstract

This article was conducted considering the translation of the theater written by American author Gertrude Stein (1874-1946), more specifically, considering the translations of her poetic texts, in order to show the importance of regarding, in the translation process, not only content, i.e., context, but also the shape and in the case of steinian texts, mainly, regarding Stein’s diction. It will be presented two translations, one authorial and the other literal, of these two fragments: one piece was extracted from the play A Circular Play, written in 1920, and the other is part of the play Four Saints in Three Acts, written in 1927; both published in Stein’s work Last Operas and Plays (1949). The authorial translation of each piece had the focus in the transcreation theory, by Haroldo de Campos, and also in theories concerning the poetic translation, by Paulo Henriques Britto.
