The purpose of this study is to analyze the narratives in Joaquim Pedro de Andrade’s documentary Garrincha, alegria do povo (1963) and the biography Estrela solitária – um brasileiro chamado Garrincha (1995), by Ruy Castro. We aim to draw comparisons between the career of footballer Mané Garrincha and the Hero’s Journey Monomyth, by Joseph Campbell, one of the most renowned scholars of universal mythology. The reflections aim to analyze Garrincha’s status in the context of myth, as he goes through the Separation–Initiation–Return stages from monomyth, a standard path of the mythological hero’s adventure, seen here as someone destined to overcome challenges and accomplish great things.
