The purpose of this article is to show how and in which ways we can read Mário de Sá-Carneiro’s novel “Eu-próprio o outro” as a transgressive text. In order to do so, we will try to test its gender and we will attempt to understand the relations established between the structural indefinition of the text, the deconstruction of the narrative paradigms, and the fluidity of the “self” represented in it. Starting from this premise, we will propose a reflection about the specificities of self-representation, having as a guideline some considerations on the genological and epochal dynamics inherent to the first Portuguese Modernism.
