The Melancholic Speech in Macabéa’s and Ângela Pralini’s Voices

Clarice Lispector is focused on the characters’ inner speech, a melancholic speech that appears in the voices of Macabéa and Ângela Pralini. These characters are ruefully carried away through the narratives, with a fragmented language. While the former makes use of only a few words, the latter speaks in bursts. Even speaking so much, Ângela Pralini shows existential helplessness and flirtation with death in her speech. Macabéa’s lack of vocabulary reflects her failure in life, as well as in society. They are characters that bring a deep reflection on the peculiar condition of a melancholic individual. In this situation, the characters’ speeches reveal their inner world, that is, a precarious world, devoid of beauty. Therefore, this article seeks to observe and analyze the melancholic speeches of these two Lispectorian characters. The studies of Lambotte (1997, 2000), Freud (1980), Peres (2003), Scliar (2003), among others, are fundamental for this analysis.
